Consistent with Lincoln’s incentives to abolish slavery, Senator Henry Wilson, the junior senator from Massachusetts, introduced a bill in Congress to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia with compensation for the lost property. Slaves in the border states that remained in the Union, shown in dark brown, were excluded from the Emancipation Proclamation, as were slaves in the Confederate areas already held by Union forces (shown in yellow). If slave owners really viewed their slaves as animals – rather than human beings helplessly under their control – they wouldn’t have had raped them.

Senate, "The Crime against Kansas," in which he attacks slavery, the South, and singles out his Senate colleague, Andrew Butler of South Carolina, for criticism. There was controversy on the issue of it being a free or slave state, but through the Compromise of 1850, California was admitted as a free state. Unfortunately, this has become counterproductive. Slavery was driving the South to become more and more dictatorial. In the upper South, where urban slaves were more common, this allowed slave owners to profit from their excess slaves without having to sell them South.

Forced labor of domestic servants can also be found in huge mansions in Europe or the Middle East because the slaveholder takes immigration documents and victims may not speak the language of the country they are in. When the American Historical Review hosted a debate in the 1980s on the origins of humanitarianism and antislavery, their contributors did not devote any attention to Black antislavery. Thirty-four years later freedom could be bought for children of slaves when they were baptized.
